This Black History month we will be highlighting an Artist whose impact changed the culture of art forever. Jean-Michel Basquiat was Born December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn, New York. He rose to fame in the 1980’s during the Neo-expressionism movement. He used his artwork to highlight poverty and the Black experience in America. He died of a heroin overdose in 1988 but his work continued to sale and increase in price. As of today, Basquiat’s highest selling painting “Untitled” 1982 was sold at Sotheby’s auction in 2017 for $110.5 million setting a record for the most ever paid for a U.S produced artwork.
Inspiration behind the Tee:
It's amazing how art has the power to inspire and motivate us. Over the past 10 years, I've become a big fan of art and one artist in particular has captured my attention. Jean-Michel Basquiat was a true visionary who used his art to highlight the struggles of the African American community. He inspired me to stand up for what I believe in and to be different, just like he was. Our new Basquiat-inspired tee pays tribute to his unique style and vision. We hope it inspires you to be bold and stand up for what you believe in, just like Basquiat did. Get ready to make a statement with our new tee, available for purchase on February 21st.
